• Biased content. Nobody affiliated with a property may review it, including current and former employees.
• Paid reviews and review exchanges. Tripadvisor calls selling, buying, or swapping reviews inherently fraudulent, and says penalties land on both the property and the reviewers.
• Incentives. Offering or promising anything in exchange for a review is against the guidelines regardless of the rating, and that includes free drinks, discounts, contest entries, and donations made in a customer's name.
• Incentives to remove a review. A property representative offering something in exchange for taking down a published review is also a violation.
• Blackmail. A traveler threatening a negative review in bad faith to extract something of value is treated as blackmail. A guest who simply says they intend to write about a bad experience is not.

How to spot a fake review on a listing

Signals are probabilistic, so look for two or three that stack up rather than acting on one.

1. Sort by newest instead of the default order, which is where clusters become obvious.
2. Look for bursts, meaning a run of five-bubble reviews posted within a day or two of each other after a quiet stretch.
3. Read for repeated phrasing across accounts, especially unusual word pairings that appear twice.
4. Check specificity. A real guest names the room, the dish, the noise from the corridor, the weather that day. Fake copy praises everything and commits to nothing.
5. Open the reviewer profile. One review ever, no photos, or a history spread across unrelated categories in different countries is a rented or throwaway account.
6. Cross-check the listing on Google or a booking site. Sentiment that disagrees sharply across platforms is worth a second look.

AI-written reviews tend to fail the specificity test rather than the grammar test. They read fluently, cover every category in order, and contain nothing a person would actually remember. Tripadvisor removed 214,000 of them in 2024, so the pattern is common enough to be worth recognizing.

How to report one

Use the reporting function on the site for a single suspect review. Tripadvisor's guidelines also state that if you believe a review was written by the owner or a competitor of a listing, you should use that reporting function, and that if you are concerned a business is engaged in multiple incidents of fraud you should email contentintegrity@tripadvisor.com.

One constraint catches people out. Tripadvisor says reviews that allege other posted reviews are fraudulent will not be posted, because that is not about your travel experience. Report the fake review through the proper channel instead of writing a review about it.

Pattern-level reports land better than single flags. Send dates, screenshots, and a side-by-side of the matching language, in order, so a moderator can see the campaign rather than one complaint.

3. Map the pattern. Account age, posting times, shared phrasing, and whether the same accounts hit your competitors too.

5. Reply once in public, calmly. State that you have no record of the visit and give a contact. Do not accuse the reviewer in public.
